The Architect

André (Andrew) Steiner dubbed “the Jewish Schindler” was a renowned Jewish Hungarian-American architect who studied Bauhaus architecture, an elite school of modern design and thought. In 1940, Steiner was briefly imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp and that same year, he and his wife fled to Slovakia with their son to escape persecution. His architectural designs were coveted by the Nazis and Steiner secretly bribed German and Slovak officials to prevent deportations of Jews. As a member of the secret and illegal Jewish “Working Group”, he convinced the Nazis to establish three work camps for Jews insisting that only Jewish laborers could build his designs. He is credited with saving 7,000 Jews (almost six times as many as Schindler) from deportation to death camps. He survived the war hiding in the mountains with his wife and son.  After the liberation of Slovakia in early 1945, he resumed his architectural career, ran a center for Jewish children and immigrated to the United States after the Communist takeover of Czechoslovakia in 1948. He called Atlanta, Georgia home, taught urban design at Georgia State University, worked as an architect, designed the Ahavath Achim Synagogue and mid-century homes around Atlanta, many of which have been restored and remain a testament to his legacy. He passed away at age 100 and is buried at Oakland Cemetery.
